Clement Freud.
Yes, as dear departed Clement Freud once notably said - "A weekend in a sunstruck Amsterdam alongside the favourite girl, who has a rapidly improving leg and a seemingly insatiable appetite for Tiga's "Shoes", well, it's is a marvelous place to be." (Paraphrasing slightly).
Still, a great voice - patronising. yet endearing and a quick wit to the end. Radio 4, and therefore my car radio, will be a lesser place.

And The Band Plaid On...
Word is that the 90's are next up for the post-whatever sound treatment. In particular Grunge is making a comeback. Or so 'they' say. Personally I couldn't give a shit. This whole Post-Rock, Post-Punk, Post-Age Stamp bollox gets on my nerves. If a song shares a sound with something that was released ten, twenty, thirty years ago then it's because we're influenced by something we heard which seeps into something else we may create, if we had the drive or inclination to do it. The whole revisionist angle is created by the record company's and the media, because they're too lazy to describe the sound properly.
That said it does give me the chance to post two tracks that I'm loving at the moment.
Janes Addiction weren't Grunge, they had split by the time the flannel and plaid brigade hit these shores, but they influenced a lot of the 'alternative rock' bands that made up the Grunge movement. They've reformed, for I think the third time, and are due to tour with Nine Inch Nails on the NINja Tour. To promote this they've released a couple of new tunes, produced by NIN's Trent Reznor. The best of these is 'Chip Away'. It's got a thumping drum and guitars and that's enough to keep me happy.
The other track is Nine Black Alps new single 'Buy Nothing'. They're not Grunge at all, but I'm sure they'll be cited as one of the 'new' bands driving the Nu Grunge sound forward, if and when the NME decide it's time. It's ace anyway

As bankers waved £10 notes out of the windows of the banks, at the protesters below, and the police, forgetting that they're public servants, not security for the banks and Greggs, whacked the heads of anyone that looked remotely grungey, people around the country expressed different views. Some were pleased that finally someone was representing their anger at the colossal fuck up the banks have made of everything. Even hiding a middle class smile when the 'anarchists' smashed a couple of windows at RBS. Effigys of bankers were burned from lamposts, grannies marched with teen rebels and the media waited for a giant Poll Tax style riot that never materialised. Some suggested turning on water cannon on the crowd, moaning that the thousands massed in the streets should 'get a bloody job', missing the point that many of these 'layabouts' were now out of work because of the very banks they were protesting against.
Meanwhile, in the corridors and plush halls of power, twenty leaders promised to come up with a plan to save us all from the giant mess they'd created. Most of the experts you heard said, to paraphrase, that there was fuck all chance of anything being achieved and that after the politics were over they would all go their merry little way and do their own thing, for their own country. Screw international cordance and cordiality. This was really just a chance to get some Jamie Oliver bakewell tart
Anyway this is the song of the moment for me
On a lighter note, heres Nicolas Sarkozy proving what you can do if you're a bit porky and short, but the head of a really big country. Hmm Carla Bruni
