New Sounds and The Return of De La Soul

De La Soul are back with their first new album in five years. Released on Nike's label SportMusic, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of 3ft High and Rising (fuck, 20 years!).

'Big Mouf'

Also hot off the press is a new Sounds tune that doesn't make me want to have several teeth extracted. Less saccharine than previous efforts then? Oh Yes

'Dorchester Hotel'

Crossing the Rubicon is out on June 2nd

Shame about the Les Dawson impression at the start of the video

We Bite

I was going to post the new TWD remix of Friendly Fires 'Jump In The Pool', but I'm not that keen on it. I've only listened to it once, to be fair to the Duke, but it hasn't really caught me like his rework of 'Wrong', which I still haven't been able to get hold of, or even the Starsailor remix.

This however is great. Designer Drugs are doing it for me at the moment (I wish that comment could be more literal) and this mix of the Spencer Product tune 'We Bite' has got some really nice moments. They may well be all over the blogs, but that's mainly because they're really really good (and prolific).

Mark in the diary

June 1st

(yes it's a non-website: it's either them being clever or me being stoopid)

If I'm Being Frank...

I don't know if I've ever told you how much I love this video. I love the song too, pop gem, but the video... I can't play hoola hoop with my kids anymore, because of this video. I'm really hoping this gets a release somewhere down the line. There's something about FrankMusik himself that I don't like, smug face or something, but I can't deny that I like his tunes. Even if he just usurps fucking Mika and becomes Camp Pop Prince, then he's achieved something and done us all a favour. Also he could easily win Eurovision for us. Give the guy a chance, damn it

Go Frank!

In-sational

When it comes to cinema, it would be fair to say I'm a little indifferent. TVs designed in the proportions of a cinema screen are another matter apparently. This is an advert at the end of the day, and I'm by no means up on the technical aspects of tv production (I'll leave that to others here) but this appears to be the shizzle. A 2 minute +, one shot film which is nice enough and then an interactive "thing". Go play nerdlings.

Watch and read here.

Interact.

Wonderful.

Awdio

The idea behind this site is to give you live streams of DJs and bands from selected clubs and venues from all around the world. Perfect if, like me, you can't actually ever get out to a bloody club anymore. Whack on the headphones, drop a couple of Surmontil-50's, relax and enjoy.

New Streets

Mike Skinner's giving away tunes, via Twitter, which I think is a first (Twitter is taking over the world! - still haven't looked at it...) He wants to spend more time making music, rather than spending a load of time getting us to buy it. I applaud the sentiment. There are a lot of artists giving away stuff at the moment and I'm loving it. If only because we can post it without getting hung drawn and quartered for it.

There are three new tunes, with another three coming next week. The best of the bunch is 'Trust Me' which has a De la Soul vibe running through it and would work very well as a single, me thinks. Next up is 'David Hassles', which is very Original Pirate Material. Best lyric - 'Your music is better than it sounds'. Track three sounds like something he came up with one night, mashed on the train or something, then laid it over some itchy dub step, 'I Love My Phone' is good enough, but my least favourite of the trio.
But what the fuck do I know? And they're free, so sod it, eh?

(Update - Apparently the idea was to record and release three songs in three days. If that's the case, then well done to them - woohoo!)

Clement Freud.

Yes, as dear departed Clement Freud once notably said - "A weekend in a sunstruck Amsterdam alongside the favourite girl, who has a rapidly improving leg and a seemingly insatiable appetite for Tiga's "Shoes", well, it's is a marvelous place to be." (Paraphrasing slightly).

Still, a great voice - patronising. yet endearing and a quick wit to the end. Radio 4, and therefore my car radio, will be a lesser place.

God Bless CF. And Shoes. And Amsterdam. And Tiga.

Forced (Foamo Remix) _ Cagedbaby
Doubt - Delphic
Dreamhunt (live at The One release party) _ Shinichi Osawa
Anthonio (Designer Drugs Remix) _ Annie
Obsession For The Disco Freaks (Rory Phillips Remix) _ Alexander Robotnik
Don't Fight It _ The Panics
Every Little Earthquake (Dekker & Johan Remix) _ Little Boots
Might Like You Better _ Amanda Blank
What You Need (The Proxy Remix) _ Tiga
(And anything by Tinchy Stryder so far)

And The Band Plaid On...

Word is that the 90's are next up for the post-whatever sound treatment. In particular Grunge is making a comeback. Or so 'they' say. Personally I couldn't give a shit. This whole Post-Rock, Post-Punk, Post-Age Stamp bollox gets on my nerves. If a song shares a sound with something that was released ten, twenty, thirty years ago then it's because we're influenced by something we heard which seeps into something else we may create, if we had the drive or inclination to do it. The whole revisionist angle is created by the record company's and the media, because they're too lazy to describe the sound properly.

That said it does give me the chance to post two tracks that I'm loving at the moment.

Janes Addiction weren't Grunge, they had split by the time the flannel and plaid brigade hit these shores, but they influenced a lot of the 'alternative rock' bands that made up the Grunge movement. They've reformed, for I think the third time, and are due to tour with Nine Inch Nails on the NINja Tour. To promote this they've released a couple of new tunes, produced by NIN's Trent Reznor. The best of these is 'Chip Away'. It's got a thumping drum and guitars and that's enough to keep me happy.

The other track is Nine Black Alps new single 'Buy Nothing'. They're not Grunge at all, but I'm sure they'll be cited as one of the 'new' bands driving the Nu Grunge sound forward, if and when the NME decide it's time. It's ace anyway

Bob Dobalina

It's almost an inbuilt duty to report certain Bob Dobalina sightings and thankfully Beyond The Wizards Sleeve popped up with one in their fantastic pyschy minimix.

The mixtape is here , it's being taken down all over the place so grab quick. I loved the Mariah remix very much, and it's all a bit frantic like that, bit ghetto, bit noisy, lots of ex-ex-ex-clusives....

Ever Get The Feeling You've Been Conned?

As bankers waved £10 notes out of the windows of the banks, at the protesters below, and the police, forgetting that they're public servants, not security for the banks and Greggs, whacked the heads of anyone that looked remotely grungey, people around the country expressed different views. Some were pleased that finally someone was representing their anger at the colossal fuck up the banks have made of everything. Even hiding a middle class smile when the 'anarchists' smashed a couple of windows at RBS. Effigys of bankers were burned from lamposts, grannies marched with teen rebels and the media waited for a giant Poll Tax style riot that never materialised. Some suggested turning on water cannon on the crowd, moaning that the thousands massed in the streets should 'get a bloody job', missing the point that many of these 'layabouts' were now out of work because of the very banks they were protesting against.
Meanwhile, in the corridors and plush halls of power, twenty leaders promised to come up with a plan to save us all from the giant mess they'd created. Most of the experts you heard said, to paraphrase, that there was fuck all chance of anything being achieved and that after the politics were over they would all go their merry little way and do their own thing, for their own country. Screw international cordance and cordiality. This was really just a chance to get some Jamie Oliver bakewell tart

Anyway this is the song of the moment for me

On a lighter note, heres Nicolas Sarkozy proving what you can do if you're a bit porky and short, but the head of a really big country. Hmm Carla Bruni

Oh and here's the new Kasabian tune, for those that haven't got it already
